The influence of King Henry VIII in Lewes doesn’t just extend to the demolition of Lewes Priory (and the subsequent construction of Southover Grange). When he ended his marriage to Anne of Cleves – his fourth wife – in 1540, he gave her a number of properties. These included what’s now known as Anne of Cleves house in Lewes, although (as many local people will delight in telling you) she didn’t ever live there.

It’s now a museum with a separate café and Tudor tea garden. Parts of the medieval house date from the 14th century; the rooms have been furnished to give an idea of how Anne’s contemporaries might have lived in the property.
